Prenatal Yoga

The practice of yoga is known to enhance awareness of the body and its dramatic changes during pregnancy and after birth. Being aware of the body's inner works will allow you to more easily relax and surrender to the power of labor. Your relaxation will decrease your pain and tension, and thereby increase your level of confidence and your body's efficiency. Yoga helps realign your body with the forces of gravity, constantly shifting during pregnancy, so that life can be experienced not only with more strength, but with a sense of dignity and delight. Each class will include a "check-in," and finish with a relaxation/visualization. Some of the benefits of yoga include:
  • relaxation
  • increased physical mobility
  • awareness of breath patterns
  • connection to baby and its movements
  • time for self-reflection

Mom-Baby Yoga & Support

Blossom's Mom-Baby yoga classes are a very comfortable, supportive environment where moms can meet other women, enjoy special times with their babies, and experience the benefits of yoga without worrying about having their babies "bother" others.

These classes have their own special rhythm: moms and babies bond (and bend), do a bit of massage and exercises for the baby, moms check in with each other and support each other, there is some breathing and toning, yoga for the moms, yoga for moms and babies together, an adorable rhythmic yet calming dance for moms with babies in arms, and a lullaby at the end to help calm the babies for their trip home.

Bring a blanket for your baby and wear loose, comfortable clothes. No prior yoga experience necessary. Newborns and their moms are welcome and may participate as gently as you like; if you have questions about when to start, do ask your midwife or doctor.

About the instructor:

Julianne Rice has been teaching yoga for over 20 years and has been on the staff at Blossom as our Mom & Baby Yoga teacher for 8 years. In addition, she teaches Hatha style classes at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment in San Jose (where she is the manager of their yoga program) as well as at Yoga is Youthfulness in Mountain View. See her website at www.juliannerice.com.

“Today we had mother-baby yoga with Julianne Rice. It was so fun! I've never done a class like this before. It was a time to play with your baby while getting some stretching/exercise. I had wondered how I'd do yoga for me and keep my baby entertained. This class accomplished just that.” - Maria Abilock

“Julianne is attentive to the needs and moods of the babies and moms and adjusts the class accordingly. She also has a great sense of humor! Moms can nurse, change diapers, comfort their babies as needed. At the end of class, we dance with our babies and then do a circle song. Many of the regulars say it’s the best part of their week.” - Jennifer Lee

Family Yoga/ Mindful Parenting Group New!

Blossom welcomes Jackie Long to our Community with her Family Yoga Class & Circle of Light Service, geared for families with children ages 3 months to 4 years. (Older siblings are welcome, too.)

Family Yoga: In today’s busy, fast-paced world, parents often spend time with their baby without truly being present. Jackie Long’s class, utilizing parent/baby yoga, song and dance, encourages parents to relax into the present moment to realize and enjoy the deep connection between themselves and their babies. Everyone benefits. Parents get to stretch, strengthen and practice being more present in the moment. Babies are offered loving attunement from their caregivers. Babies also receive gentle stretches that help their blood circulate, their muscles tone, and their bodies relax. As parents sing songs and move their bodies to the beat, babies also learn about music, rhythm and rhyme!

Mindful Parenting: Raising kids with calm bodies, quiet minds, and open hearts!: Even for the most experienced yoga & mediation practitioner, it is all too easy for parents to react unconsciously in moments of stress and overwhelm. Mindful parenting is a practice, and requires support and guidance. Jackie Long is passionate about supporting people on the path of parenthood, and she believes the world will be a more compassionate place as more people commit to the path of parenting more consciously. Therefore, Jackie is facilitating a mindfulness-based parenting support group once a month at Blossom Birth on Sunday nights from 6 to 6:30pm. This group is free and open to the community! Please come to Blossom Birth to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!
